The Parkdale Village neighbourhood in Toronto’s west-end is becoming gentrified while still hanging on to its edgy and Bohemian character.
Located just east of Roncesvalles Village, this area is bringing in a new pulse of hip and artsy businesses, along with ultra chic renovations that are creating a designer/retro style that is creeping into the homes and houses of the area.
Parkdale's Queen Street is becoming known as a hot and trendy hood with an added rough element that makes it still edgy and interesting. There is an artistic influence that attracts like-minded people to living and shopping here with contemporary Art Galleries, antique & vintage shops; boutiques, lounges and fab eateries.
This diverse area, that mixes rooming houses and lower income rental properties along with renovated and restored properties resembling works of art, was once the mecca for the elite in the first part of the 20th century. Grand mansions on tree-lined streets with lake views attracted this wealthy group to Parkdale Village. The neighbourhood spiraled downward, as the area was cut off from the lake with the opening of the Gardiner Expressway and demolishing of the Sunnyside Amusement Park. There was a mass exodus of the wealthy and the area became sketchy and drab.
Parkdale Village is like many other urban neighbourhoods that are experiencing gentrification and growth. As well they are seeing the trend of older homes becoming restored and completely renovated along with the addition of funky shops and businesses that are attracting hipsters to the hood. This west-end Toronto location offers close proximity to downtown via transit and highways, as well as being close to the Lake. Water enthusiasts can enjoy sporting choices ranging from the Toronto Sailing and Canoe Club, Argonaut Rowing club and Dragon Boating at the Sunnyside Paddling Club, not to mention the Martin Goodman Trail that hugs the shoreline and connects the western and eastern beaches, bringing joggers, cyclists and walkers to the water’s edge.
The housing stock in Parkdale Village is an eclectic mixture of Victorian detached, semis, row houses and large Queen Anne and Edwardian architecture, sharing their real estate space with mid and low-rise apartment buildings that are tired and worn.
Creative homeowners are taking their spaces to new heights with contemporary renovations marrying the vintage and historical period character that distinguishes these properties from other areas of the city. The gentrification of Parkdale is slowly taking shape, and buyers priced out of hoods like Roncesvalles or Beaconsfield Village are looking for opportunities that will suite their budget and lifestyle. Further east, at the border of Queen and Dufferin, a condo boom is taking place, adding more housing for the hip urbanites, adding to the energetic vibe of the downtown-west hoods.
